Christmas in July
Christmas at Teen Challenge is truly a special time for each man and woman walking the road to recovery. For some, it may be difficult to be away from family but for others, it could be a welcomed refuge as they avoid stressful family conflict and triggering situations.
We recognize the range of emotions this time of year can evoke and strive to care for each client as they face the holidays in recovery.
Each centre has their own traditions and events that play into the season, but all are focused on creating a meaningful experience for our clients as we focus on God's ultimate gift. December usually includes extra-special food, movie nights, pizza nights, hockey games, board games, and moments that they will carry for many days, weeks, or years to come. We have incredibly dedicated staff that go above and beyond during the holidays.
During the dog days of summer, we are reflecting on some Christmas stories from our centres.
Special Sneakers
Staff and clients at the Atlantic Men’s Centre celebrated with a festive brunch followed by a Christmas chapel service and a relaxed time of opening gifts. These gifts were not brought by Santa but provided by incredibly generous donors who provided gifts or donations to make Christmas a little extra special for the 18 men doing the hard work of recovery with us this year.
Several weeks before Christmas, each man wrote their “wish list”. They could include three items that would be particularly useful or meaningful to them. Members of a local church headed out with lists in hand while others donated money and our staff finished off the shopping.
When the staff at the local Sport Check asked, "Are you shopping for Christmas gifts?" they weren’t expecting to learn about Teen Challenge. Kent shared why he was buying so many sneakers and hoodies, and how it was because of our wonderful donors the guys would have gifts to open on Christmas. She was so moved; the store staff offered a generous discount.
When the gifts were opened, one incredibly grateful man shared "My whole life, I've only ever had Walmart sneakers." He was deeply moved to receive a pair of Nikes. Another client was overwhelmed by the feelings the day brought. This was his first sober Christmas in many, many years.
Isn’t it amazing to see God restoring families and relationships and giving new hope for the future?
Christmas Competition
Staff at our Eastern Ontario Men’s Centre created a month of Christmas-themed competitions for clients. Points were awarded for memorizing scripture, trivia questions, cookie decorating, door decorating, and other challenges. To make it even more fun, staff and clients alike competed for the big prize! The ultimate champion was announced during the family Christmas dinner.
The guys had a lot of fun with all the activities. From baking cookies to decorating gingerbread houses, it made December extra special.
Feels Like Family
The ladies at Atlantic Hope spent December decorating, baking, and crafting for Christmas. This helped bring them together and focus on the significance of the season. With just five ladies here over the holidays, it felt like family gathered around the table.
For those with local families and children, they were invited for a special afternoon visit from Santa. Staff arranged for video messages from far-away family and friends. The women’s hearts were full after receiving the messages via TV.
Santa’s Favourite
Each year, we have a volunteer “Santa” that drives several hours to be a part of Christmas morning at the Ontario Men’s Centre. After a jam-packed December at a large department store and private parties, it is this appearance that is the most meaningful. He distributes gift bags filled with items donated by local supporters.
At first, the guys are not sure what to think of Santa, but before long, someone will ask for a photo to send his kids and then everyone gets in on the fun!
